Once the ceremony is over and the celebrations begin, your reception becomes the heart of the wedding day.

This is where you and your guests will spend the majority of your time — dining, chatting, laughing, and making memories together. And whilst beautiful flowers can undoubtedly transform a reception space, choosing the right wedding reception flowers is about more than simply filling tables with blooms.

Just like your ceremony flowers, your reception flowers should feel intentional, balanced, and beautifully suited to the space around them.

In this blog post, I'll share some of my favourite wedding reception flower ideas, what works particularly well in different settings, and how to create a reception that feels cohesive, elegant, and full of atmosphere.

Why Your Wedding Reception Flowers Should Work With the Space

When planning your wedding reception flowers, it's important to consider the venue itself.

The size of the room, ceiling height, table layout, and existing features all play a role in determining which floral designs will work best.

A grand ballroom with soaring ceilings may benefit from taller centrepieces that draw the eye upwards and fill the space beautifully, whilst a more intimate reception room may suit lower, more refined arrangements that encourage conversation and connection.

The most beautiful wedding reception flowers don't compete with the venue — they enhance it.

Choosing the Right Centrepieces for Your Reception

Centrepieces are often one of the first things couples think about when planning their wedding reception flowers, and for good reason. They help set the tone for the room and create a beautiful focal point for your guests.

High vs Low Centrepieces

One of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to choose high or low centrepieces.

Low centrepieces create a romantic, intimate atmosphere and work beautifully in many venues. They allow guests to see one another easily across the table and create a lovely sense of warmth and connection.

Tall centrepieces, on the other hand, can create an incredible impact. They're particularly effective in venues with high ceilings, where they help fill the vertical space and bring a sense of scale and grandeur to the room.

Neither option is inherently better than the other — the right choice depends on your venue, your overall aesthetic, and the atmosphere you'd like to create.

Centrepieces for Round Tables

Round tables offer plenty of flexibility when it comes to wedding reception flowers.

For couples who love abundance, full bowl arrangements create a luxurious and elegant focal point in the centre of the table.

If your style leans a little more refined or understated, grouped bud vases and smaller vessels filled with carefully selected blooms can look just as beautiful. They often create a softer, more relaxed feel whilst still bringing colour, texture, and floral interest to the tablescape.

Centrepieces for Long Tables

Long guest tables call for a slightly different approach.

Because guests are seated along the length of the table, floral designs need to work with the shape of the table rather than compete with it.

Bud vases, compote arrangements, and narrower vessels work particularly well, creating movement and interest without taking up too much valuable table space.

This approach often feels effortless and romantic whilst allowing the table styling as a whole to shine.

Creating a Beautiful Top Table or Sweetheart Table

If there's one area of the reception where I encourage couples to create a little extra floral abundance, it's around the top table or sweetheart table.

After all, your wedding day is centred around the two of you.

Throughout dinner, speeches, and many of the key moments of the reception, all eyes will naturally be drawn towards your table. Beautiful flowers help frame the space, draw attention to the two of you, and add so much beauty and atmosphere to your photographs.

Whether you choose abundant floral clusters, elegant meadow-style designs, or a collection of smaller vessels filled with gorgeous blooms, wedding reception flowers around your top table are always a worthwhile investment.

This is also one of my favourite places to repurpose ceremony flowers.

Floral columns, plinth arrangements, and grounded ceremony flowers can often be moved behind or in front of the top table after the ceremony, creating an even more impactful reception design whilst allowing your flowers to continue being enjoyed throughout the day.

Looking Beyond the Tables

Whilst centrepieces are often the main focus when couples think about wedding reception flowers, there are often other opportunities within a venue to create beautiful floral moments and add even more atmosphere to the space.

One of my favourite examples is a focal hanging installation.

If your venue has the right architecture or an opportunity to suspend florals above your tables, a hanging installation can create an incredible wow factor. Drawing the eye upwards, it helps fill the space beautifully and creates a sense of abundance without taking up any room on the tables themselves.

Whether designed as a cloud of flowers, a foliage-rich installation, or a more contemporary floral statement, hanging installations can completely transform a reception space and become one of the most memorable design features of the day.

But hanging installations aren't the only opportunity to create impact.

When planning your wedding reception flowers, it's always worth looking at the venue's existing features and considering how flowers can work with them. Beautiful fireplaces, grand staircases, statement bars, pianos, or architectural focal points can all become wonderful opportunities for floral styling.

A staircase adorned with flowers can create a breathtaking feature and a beautiful backdrop for photographs. Likewise, a fireplace can be dressed with florals and candles to create a romantic focal point that feels completely in harmony with the room.

The key is to allow your flowers to enhance the venue rather than compete with it. By working with the space and drawing attention to its most beautiful features, your wedding reception flowers will feel more intentional, cohesive, and impactful throughout the entire celebration.

Don't Forget the Candles

Flowers may be the stars of the show, but candles are often what bring a reception space to life.

Beautiful candlesticks and candle holders chosen to complement the style of your wedding reception flowers add another layer of texture, warmth, and elegance to the overall design.

As daylight fades and candlelight begins to flicker across the room, the atmosphere changes completely.

Sometimes it's the combination of flowers and candlelight that creates the most romantic and memorable reception spaces.

Making the Most of Your Wedding Flowers

One of the things I always encourage couples to think about is how their flowers can work hard for them throughout the day.

This isn't about cutting corners or reducing your floral investment — it's about being intentional and maximising impact.

Some ceremony flowers can be designed specifically with repurposing in mind. Floral meadows, plinth arrangements, floral columns, and certain aisle flowers can often be moved into the reception space, helping to create additional floral moments without requiring entirely separate installations.

Similarly, some centrepiece designs can occasionally double as aisle flowers earlier in the day before being moved to guest tables for dinner.

The goal is never to do less with flowers. It's to create more impact, more atmosphere, and more beauty throughout your wedding day.

Final Thoughts

The most beautiful wedding reception flowers aren't necessarily the biggest or the most elaborate.

They're the ones that feel intentional, balanced, and completely in harmony with your venue and overall wedding design.

Whether you're dreaming of abundant centrepieces, elegant bud vases, dramatic floral statements, hanging installations, or soft candlelit tablescapes, the key is choosing designs that work beautifully within the space and create the atmosphere you want your guests to experience.

And, as always, trust your florist.

A talented floral designer will help you choose wedding reception flowers that not only look beautiful, but also feel perfectly suited to your venue, your style, and the way you want your wedding day to feel.
